BIO

Carter Tholl is a lyric coloratura and a recent graduate of Wichita State University’s Opera Performance program, where she studied with baritone Alan Held. As an early music singer, she has performed at the Utrecht Early Music Festival (Fringe) in 2017 and participated in programs such as the Early Music Summer School at the Conservatory van Amsterdam, the International Baroque Institute at Longy, and the Baroque Opera Workshop at Queen’s College. She was a 2017 recipient of the Summer Workshop Scholarship from Early Music America. She has also been a recipient of a Koch Artist Enabling Grant in 2016 and 2017. In competition, Carter was a top 10 finalist at the Rochester Classical Vocal Idol Competition (2017), and a top 10 finalist in the Grand Concours de Chant, the winner of the 2016/17 Concerto/Aria competition at Wichita State University, as well as a division winner of the NATS Valley of the Sun Chapter. Past opera roles include: Hero (Béatrice et Bénédict), Gretel (Hänsel und Gretel), Hebe (Les Indes Galantes), Königin der Nacht (Die Zauberflöte), Servilia (La Clemenza di Tito), and Fräulein Silberklang (Der Schauspieldirektor). Also at home on the musical theater stage, Carter made her European debut as Sally Brown in You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown, at Vienna’s English Theatre in Vienna, Austria. This fall, Carter performed with Opera Kansas as The Plaintiff in Gilbert and Sullivan’s Trial by Jury, and as the soprano soloist for Bach Cantata 80 with The Wichita Chamber Chorale, and performed as the soprano soloist for Messiah with the Wichita Choral Society and at University Congregational Church. This spring she performs the soprano roles in the children’s opera The Ugly Duckling by Andrew Duncan with Opera Saratoga’s Opera-to-go outreach program.
